Clear pronunciation matters more than a big vocabulary. People understand you when your sounds are right, even if your grammar is simple. The myth is that you need a coach or expensive classes. You don't. With a phone and 15 minutes a day, you can sound noticeably clearer in a month. Here is a home routine built for Indian learners.

1. Minimal pairs

Minimal pairs are words that differ by one sound: "ship" vs "sheep", "bat" vs "bet", "live" vs "leave". Indians often confuse these. Say each pair slowly, then faster. Record. The SpeakNow minimal-pairs tool scores your accuracy and tells you which sound you are mixing.

2. Shadowing

Play a short English clip - a news line, a movie dialogue. Repeat immediately, copying rhythm and stress, not just words. Do not translate. Just echo. Five minutes daily trains your mouth muscles and your ear together.

3. Tongue twisters

"She sells sea shells." "Red lorry yellow lorry." Start slow, then speed up. They fix tricky sounds like s, r, l, th. Don't worry about looking silly; nobody hears you at home.

4. The "th" sound

Indians often say "dis" for "this" and "dat" for "that". Put your tongue between your teeth: "this, that, three, think, mother". Practice 10 times. This one sound alone makes a big difference.

5. Record and compare

Use your phone. Say a sentence. Play it. Compare with a native audio from a dictionary app. Note the gap in stress and vowel length.

6. Read aloud daily

Take any paragraph from a book or news site. Read it out loud with feeling. Reading aloud forces your mouth to form every word, not skip them in your head.

Weekly plan

  • Mon: minimal pairs (ship/sheep)
  • Tue: shadowing (1 clip)
  • Wed: tongue twisters
  • Thu: "th" sounds
  • Fri: record a 1-min story
  • Sat: review weak sounds
  • Sun: rest

In 30 days your speech will be noticeably clearer. The SpeakNow pronunciation tool gives instant feedback, so you never practise a sound wrong for weeks. Consistency, not coaching, is the secret.

Track your progress

Keep a simple score diary. Note one sound you improved each week. After a month you will have fixed ship/sheep, th, and r/l - the three big Indian problem areas. Progress you can see keeps you motivated far better than vague advice.

Start today

Set a daily alarm for 15 minutes. Do not negotiate with yourself. One minimal-pair set, one tongue twister, one recorded sentence. In a month the difference will be obvious to everyone except you - because change is gradual and you live inside it.
